The Queens Zoo is an 18-acre wildlife destination nestled inside Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Unlike larger zoos, its compact cageless loop layout makes it especially well-suited for toddlers and young children — you can see everything without backtracking, and the whole visit typically takes just 1–2 hours.
Highlights include the iconic geodesic dome aviary — originally built for the 1964 World's Fair as the Winston Churchill Pavilion — which now houses Bald Eagles, Cattle Egrets, and other Western Hemisphere birds. The Sea Lion Pool features daily feedings, while the Animal Trail showcases Andean bears, American bison, Canadian lynx, pumas, coyotes, and Roosevelt elk. The Domestic Animals petting area, claimed to be the largest in the tri-state area, lets kids get up close with Flemish giant rabbits, Texas Longhorn cattle, Belted Galloway cows, and Jacob's four-horned sheep.
Admission is $10.95 for adults, $7.95 for children ages 3–12, and free for children under 3. All tickets are timed and must be booked online in advance — no walk-up purchases are available. A WCS Family Membership grants unlimited entry to all four WCS New York zoos and the New York Aquarium, and NYC ID card holders receive a free one-year WCS membership. Education programs run for children as young as 12 months, with summer camps, birthday parties, and stroller safaris also available.
