The Institute for Collaborative Education (ICE), recently rebranded as Ny.ICE, is a small, progressive public school serving grades 6–12 in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. Part of NYC's District 2 and a member of the New York State Performance Standards Consortium, ICE students are exempt from most Regents exams and instead demonstrate mastery through Performance-Based Assessment Tasks (PBATs) presented to panels of teachers, parents, and community members.
With an enrollment of approximately 480 students and a 13:1 student-to-teacher ratio, ICE fosters an intimate, inquiry-driven learning environment. The school offers a robust arts program including chorus, theater, digital media arts, and an award-winning middle school jazz band. Extracurricular offerings include Model UN, Green Team, Gender Sexuality Alliance, and PSAL sports. Approximately 98–99% of graduates go on to college. Students are drawn from all five boroughs and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, with 66% of admissions seats prioritized for students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
