Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration

Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration sits in New York Harbor and documents the journey of over 12 million immigrants processed here between 1892 and 1954. The main museum — free with a required ferry ticket — takes visitors through the soaring Great Hall, Baggage Room, restored dormitories, and interactive exhibits featuring photographs, heirlooms, and films that bring the immigrant experience to life.

For families and school groups, the Save Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour is a standout add-on: a 90-minute guided walk through the unrestored hospital complex, complete with hard hats and peeling walls. Note that Hard Hat Tours are restricted to visitors age 13 and older and traverse 1.5 miles of uneven terrain — not stroller-friendly. School groups can book dedicated guided hospital tours for $25/person through Save Ellis Island (ferry tickets purchased separately).

Ferry tickets are required to reach the island and are provided exclusively by Statue City Cruises, departing from Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Ticket prices: children under 4 free; ages 4–12 $16.50; adults 13+ $25.50; seniors 62+ $22.50. Audio tours are included. NPS ranger-led programs, a Junior Ranger program, and group field trip options with chaperone requirements (1 adult per 10 students) are available.
