Battery Park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan, where the Hudson River meets New York Harbor. It's one of the city's most iconic outdoor spaces, offering families wide-open lawns, shaded walkways, and sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Whether you're pushing a stroller along the esplanade or letting the kids run free on the grass, it's a genuinely lovely spot to spend a few hours.
The park is stroller-friendly with paved paths throughout, and the open layout makes it easy to keep an eye on little ones. Older kids will love spotting the ferries heading out to Staten Island — and if you want a free adventure on the water, the Staten Island Ferry terminal is just steps away. It's one of the best free rides in the city, with incredible views of the harbor.
Battery Park is also the departure point for ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, which can make for a memorable (if pricier) family outing. The park itself, however, is completely free to enter and enjoy year-round.
The waterfront location means it can be breezy, so pack an extra layer for babies and toddlers on cooler days. Summer weekends get busy, but the park is large enough that you can usually find a quieter corner. It connects seamlessly to the Hudson River Greenway, making it easy to extend a walk up toward Tribeca and Pier 25.
