CancerCare is a national nonprofit headquartered in Midtown Manhattan offering completely free professional support services for anyone affected by cancer — including children, adolescents, and their families. All services are provided by licensed oncology social workers who specialize in supporting people through cancer diagnosis, treatment, and loss.
Through its CancerCare for Kids® program, children as young as five are eligible for individual counseling, whether they are coping with their own cancer diagnosis, a loved one's illness, or the loss of a loved one to cancer. Counseling is available in English and Spanish, and can be conducted in person (for NY and NJ residents), by video, or by telephone — making it highly accessible for NYC families regardless of transportation barriers.
CancerCare also offers free support groups and community programs, including the Healing Hearts Family Bereavement Camp, a free retreat for families with children coping with the loss of a loved one to cancer. National online programs are available to families across the country. To get started, families can call the CancerCare Hopeline at 800-813-4673. Note: CancerCare relocated its NYC office from Chelsea to 485 Madison Avenue in July 2025.
