Stroller-friendlyIndoorOutdoorFree admission

Some of the best things in New York City are free — and the Staten Island Ferry might top that list for families. More than just a way to get between boroughs, the Ferry is an attraction unto itself: for no charge, you can take a 25-minute voyage by water from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island, taking in the Statue of Liberty and the stunning vistas of New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline. Babies, toddlers, big kids — this one works for everyone.

The Staten Island Ferry has been fare-free since 1997. The single route runs 5.2 miles through New York Harbor, completing the trip in about 25 minutes. The Ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. More frequent service — every 15 or 20 minutes — is provided on weekdays during rush hours (6:00 AM–9:30 AM and 3:30 PM–8:00 PM), with 30-minute service otherwise. On weekends, service runs every 30 minutes throughout the day.

Strollers are a breeze — simply roll up the ramp with no folding required. Both the Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan and the St. George Terminal in Staten Island are ADA accessible with escalators and elevators. Restrooms are available at both terminals, and concessions are available at Whitehall Terminal.

For the best Statue of Liberty views when departing Manhattan, head to the right (starboard) side of the ferry and make your way to the outdoor deck. Note that you must disembark when you reach Staten Island — you cannot stay onboard for the return. Near St. George Terminal, you'll find Empire Outlets and easy access to Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.
