NYC Transit Museum

Downtown Brooklyn
Indoor

Housed underground in a genuine 1936 decommissioned subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, the NYC Transit Museum is one of the most unique kid-friendly destinations in New York City. The lower platform level spans a full city block and is lined with over 20 vintage subway and elevated rail cars dating back to 1908 — and kids can actually board and walk through them, spotting how style and technology changed across the decades.

Upstairs, the bus-themed mezzanine features real city buses kids can climb into and pretend to drive, along with interactive exhibits on the cultural and engineering history of NYC transit. Regular family programs include Transit Tots (storytime and crafts for ages 18 months–3 years on select Sunday mornings), Movers and Makers (a monthly tour and workshop for ages 5–14), and Creation Station drop-in activities every Saturday from 11am–2pm, free with admission.

A few things to plan for: the museum is underground and only partially climate-controlled, so it can be hot in summer and cold in winter. There is no elevator — strollers must be carried down multiple flights of stairs, so a lightweight or foldable stroller is strongly recommended. An unattended stroller parking area is available at the back of the museum. Advance ticket booking is recommended, especially on weekends.
