If your toddler didn't land a 2K or preschool spot this year, NYPL branches are one of the best — and most underused — free options in the city. The New York Public Library offers free programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers at local branches across the system, spanning the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.
Sessions include books, songs, rhymes, and fingerplays that foster early literacy skills — and they're a great opportunity for bonding and meeting other children and caregivers in the community. Year-round programming includes storytimes, open play, art activities, and multilingual programs for the youngest kids.
Programs by age include Baby Laptime (ages 0–18 months), Toddler Storytime (walking toddlers through approximately age 3–5), Bilingual Storytime in English and Spanish at select branches (ages 0–5), and Library Playdates where caregivers can explore developmentally appropriate play materials in a safe, warm environment.
All programs are free. Registration requirements vary — some sessions are walk-in, others require signing up online in advance. Some bilingual sessions are capped at 20 families on a first-come, first-served basis, so it pays to arrive a few minutes early. Stroller accessibility varies by branch room, so it's worth calling ahead. The easiest way to find current times is to check the NYPL events calendar and filter by "Children & Families."
