Jane's Exchange has been a fixture on East 3rd Street since 1993, making it NYC's longest-running children's and maternity consignment shop. Founded by Eva Dorsey — a single mother who couldn't find a shop like this near her East Village home — the store is now owned and operated by Eva's daughter, Jane Dorsey, who carries on the same community-minded mission.
The shop carries brand new and gently used clothing, shoes, toys, books, accessories, and big-ticket baby gear including strollers, car seats, carriers, cribs, high chairs, and bassinets. The size range runs from newborn through 8 years old, and maternity and nursing clothing and accessories are stocked throughout. Consignment appointments take about 15 minutes; call ahead to schedule one. You earn store credit as your items sell, but you can absolutely shop without consigning anything.
The space is set up with parents in mind: there's a play area and book nook at the front where kids can settle in while you browse, plus a dedicated shoe room, changing room, and nursing station. Staff are known for being genuinely helpful, and customers come from all five boroughs and beyond.
