Greenburgh Nature Center is a 33-acre nonprofit nature preserve in Scarsdale, Westchester — and one of the best half-day escapes from the city for families who want their kids off screens and in the dirt. The grounds include hiking trails, a pond, a barnyard, a birds-of-prey aviary, working beehives, an organic garden, and a nature-themed playground. Inside the stone Manor House, there's a discovery room with interactive exhibits and a live animal museum with more than 100 critters — snakes, ferrets, chinchillas, and more.
The headline draw for little ones is the seasonal Dino Dig: a greenhouse transformed into an archaeological site where kids dig, scrape, and brush layers of sand to uncover dinosaur bones. It runs September through October, Tuesday–Sunday, 10:30 AM–3:30 PM, and costs just $5 per child ages 2+. No advance booking required — just buy tickets at the Manor House door.
Beyond the dig, the center runs a full calendar of hands-on programming year-round: maple sugaring in March, pond exploration in April and May, guided butterfly tours in summer, and raptor feedings on weekends. Private "Back to Nature" naturalist-led programs are available for families and small groups by email reservation.
