Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12-acre waterfront gem on the East River in the Hunters Point section of Long Island City, Queens. Set on the site of a former industrial dockyard, the park preserves its iconic rail gantries alongside beautifully landscaped lawns, four fishing piers, and some of the best views of the Midtown Manhattan skyline you'll find outside of Manhattan itself.
Families with young kids will love the Tot Lot Playground and the seasonal spray pad with a misting fountain — a major draw on hot summer days. The entire promenade is paved and level, making it one of the most stroller- and wheelchair-friendly waterfront parks in Queens. Restrooms are available within the park near the main entrances. For older kids, there are basketball courts, handball courts, a fishing pier, and open lawns to run around in.
A few practical tips: the park is a 10–15 minute walk from the Vernon Blvd–Jackson Ave stop on the 7 train, so factor that in with young children in tow. Morning visits are recommended to catch shade at the play structures — afternoon sun can make the equipment hot. There are no food vendors inside the park, so pack snacks or plan to stop at a nearby café like LIC Landing by Coffeed before or after your visit. Admission is always free.
