The Bronx Zoo is one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world, spanning 265 acres in Bronx Park and home to over 11,000 animals. Operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society, it offers an extraordinary range of experiences for families — from the toddler-friendly Children's Zoo with its petting farmyard and squirrel monkeys, to the immersive Congo Gorilla Forest, the one-of-a-kind Bug Carousel, and seasonal favorites like the Wild Asia Monorail.
Year-round indoor exhibits including JungleWorld and Congo Gorilla Forest make it a solid rainy-day option, while outdoor habitats like Tiger Mountain, African Plains, and Himalayan Highlands (home to red pandas and snow leopards) are open in all seasons. The zoo is simply too large to see in a single visit — most families find it helpful to plan around the ages in their group and prioritize two or three key areas.
Admission uses flex (dynamic) pricing, so tickets are cheaper on weekdays and during off-peak seasons. General admission is free on Wednesdays (advance tickets required, released Monday at 5 PM — they go fast). Children under 2 are always free. A WCS membership covers the Bronx Zoo plus the Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and NY Aquarium, and pays for itself in one or two visits for most families. NYC ID cardholders qualify for a free one-year WCS membership.
Strollers are welcome throughout and available to rent at all entrances. The Dancing Crane Café is open year-round with indoor seating and outdoor marsh views; free water bottle refills are available there year-round. Re-entry is not permitted, so plan accordingly.
